Spanish ShelterBox Challenge- the results!

It's with great pleasure that I can announce the winners of this year's ShelterBox Spanish Challenge. The entries were judged by myself and 2 other Heads of Department who form part of the Association for Language Learning (Devon Branch). There were a number of really creative and well put-together entries again this year and showed that HUGE amounts of work had gone into their making. However, despite all 3 of us initially having different ideas, the combined points mean that we came to the following outcome:

1st = Lauren, Laura and Emily from Route 39 Academy. Judges thought that the "quality of Spanish was excellent" and that it was "really creative". (To view the video please go to https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1-GoTN6IM1ESUJOcENvdElpNWc/view?usp=sharing)

2nd = Lawlor from Royal Grammar School, Newcastle. Judges thought that there were "Very well chosen emotive images and authentic footage" and it was also "the most professional" whilst the quality of language was also very impressive.

Awesome work ladies- your Amazon vouchers are well deserved!

With the national ShelterBox Spanish Challenge competition deadline looming it's time to decide on the video to enter from Route 39 Academy. There were a huge number of fantastic videos created, however there are 6 which we would like to make available for an open vote based on their creativity and how engaging they are:

ShelterBox Spanish Challenge

During the course of this half term students will be working on a project to enter a national competition run by the Association for Language Learning Devon branch- the ShelterBox Spanish Challenge. This should be an opportunity for students to be incredibly creative and really empathise with victims of a disaster- in this case after the earthquake in Chile in 2010 (an area which I had visited just a few months before!).

 

ShelterBox project launch, Life after a disaster

Yesterday was a truly superb moment, which made me proud yet again of the students at Route 39. We were delighted to welcome a volunteer from the Bideford Rotary Club on behalf of ShelterBox, the disaster relief charity based in Cornwall. 

We started the session with a question-generation task- what questions could students come up with about the big green box in the middle of the room. In each of the 3 sessions the atmosphere was fantastic, with a real process taking place of questions moving from the simple to the more thoughtful- from "What is it?" towards, "Why is the chimney on that black box (the stove which had been set up in advance of the session) so tall?" to even "Would ShelterBox ever have second thoughts about going into a country?". 

    

        

After a brief explanation of what ShelterBox is and it's mission of supporting people around the world who are in most need after a disaster (both natural and man-made as Syria is currently one of the biggest recipients of support) the sessions moved on to reflecting what items students would choose for their own ShelterBoxes and what materials they would be made of- a key thread which will be picked up in STEM. 

Personally I found the inflatable Solar LED lamp the most surprising and fascinating item- that by inflating it the light is far, far stronger. So simple yet so effective! The water filtration system also received a fair bit of attention- seeing the mud which had been removed lingering in the filter was truly eye-opening!

Life after a disaster- fridge sheets

As we begin our new topic, "Life after a disaster" so it's time to share our new fridge sheets! Please pin them up somewhere obvious (the fridge is the ideal place!) and make sure the whole family challenges each other to build up short and then gradually ever more complex sentences.
